What a Golden Weekend…

What a wonderful weekend for the Tripp Academy. Over the Oxford U13, U15 and Hampshire U16 a tally of 7 Golds, 4 Silvers and 7 Bronze medals were won. Please look on our results page to see who won what.
If that wasn’t enough our very own Andrew Smith and England’s finest singles player won the Slovenian Open after having 2 years out of the game due to injury. Bringing our gold tally up to 8 medals.
A massive well done to everyone…

The ups & downs of the U17 Nationals…

Players competing at the U17 Nationals included Brodie Miller, Amber Lam, Alice Torjussen, Joel Douse, Mark Sadler, Connor Bambrick, Harrison Simcock and Sean Vendy.

There were some absolutely fantastic matches over the weekend and all Academy matches were played in great spirits……

Playing two years above their age both Amber Lam and Alice Torjussen faired well putting in some great performances. Brodie Miller was the only girl to go through her group which set up a second round match against Jess Hopton. Both sets were close at the mid way point but Jess had a bit more on the day to close the match out. In the girls doubles Brodie reached the 1/4 finals loosing to the No.1 seeds.

Well the boys singles was far more of a challenge for the coaches who couldn’t keep up with all the players on court.

Harrison was the only casualty in the group stages with being a set up he then narrowly lost the second 22-20 and gave his opponent the momentum to take the third.

Three out of the four boys then progressed into the 1/4 finals with only Joel loosing to European Champion Alex Lane in two strong competitive sets.

After a week of illness for Sean Vendy it got even worse as during his quarter final match, he injured his foot and collapsed to the floor. After having to forfeit the match the physio looked at his ankle and thought he had dislodged a bone. So it was off to A&E and the end of the U17 nationals for Sean.

Playing the No.2 seed in the boys singles Mark Sadler started badly and let his opponent run away with the first. After getting it back on track Mark looked strong in the second and took a big lead but just couldn’t keep focused and let the No.2 seed back in and win the match in two sets.

So the last opportunity in the boys was Connor Bambrick who had already booked himself a place in the mixed semi final. After a very poor first set he got his game together to run away with the second and dominant the third set. The day got even better for Connor by reaching the semi finals of the boys doubles. Unfortunately in all three semi’s he had the No.1 seeds and in each event it just wasn’t going to be his day, but a great nationals overall.

In the boys doubles Harrison Simcock stepped into the shoes of Sean Vendy and proved his doubles strength by reaching the final with Ben Lane. This was the first time they had ever played together.

What a fantastic display to reach the finals and without dropping a set. So the final was against the No.1 seeds and after three fantastic sets of amazing and competitive badminton. Harrison narrowly lost 21-19 in the third to come home with a Silver medal.

Well done to everyone for their efforts.

Johnnie retains his national title….

The weekend started with Johnnie Torjussen, Avi Gupta, Kit Clement Dawson and Dominique Bell competing at the U13 English Nationals. After massive improvements this year Kit was playing in his first nationals. Unfortunately he never got through his group but he showed massive promise for next season. Avi Gupta stepped up his game and had an absolutely fantastic tournament. Playing some inspiring badminton he reached the 1/4 finals of the boys singles and the boys doubles.

Johnnie Torjussen was left to carry the Tripp Academy torch and he did this with grace and dignity. Johnnie cruised through the earlier rounds of all three events to set up three semi finals on the Sunday.

In the semi-finals of the singles Johnnie met up with Steven Stallwood. After a slow start, Johnnie raised his game and took the first set 21-14. With the first set comfortably under his belt, Johnnie ran away with the second to win a convincing 21-5, and set up a final against young gun Harry Huang.

In the final, Johnnie continued to dominate, playing some of the most impressive badminton of the tournament and took the first set 21-11. The second set was tighter with never more than a few points between them but Johnnie held his nerve to win out 22-20.

Congratulations to Johnnie on an inspired and exemplary performance. Without dropping a set he retains the prestigious title of National Singles Champion and joins the exclusive club of U11 & U13 champions.

Everyone at the Academy is very proud of you.. Keep it up.
